MASE Holds Second Meeting

Local Leaders from Mid-Atlantic-Southeast TURN (MASE) met July 16-17, 2010, to continue development of local and regional plans.  The agenda included presentations and conversations on teacher compensation and on preparation and support of new teachers.

The MASE meeting began with a check-in. Leaders from each local reported strengths and challenges of their respective organizations to set the climate for sharing and networking throughout the 2-day meeting.

The first of two main presenters was Melissa Rasberry, a Policy Associate from the Center for Teaching Quality.  Her presentation, Performance Pay: Not Your Father's "Merit Pay" provided an overview of various performance-pay program components that are being implemented in districts and states and what they are learning from that work.  The presentation was based on their report, Performance-Pay for Teachers: Designing a System that Students Deserve.

The second presentation In Pursuit of Professionalism: from Beginning Teacher to Master Teacher, was made by Dr. Diane Painter, faculty and Keith Lichliter, recent secondary education graduate, Shenandoah University. Dr. Painter led a discussion among the TURN participants of the Pre-Service programs and supports in place to prepare students for the teaching profession.  Additional handouts from the presentation are in the MASE Archive.

After the presentations, Mary McDonald, Core Service Director for the Coalition for Educational Change) facilitated an action-planning session.  Local teams identified the ideas and strategies they would be taking away from the meeting and updated their local action plans. The chart of take-aways & next steps have been distributed to the participants.  A system will be put in place to facilitate progress reporting.

The closing session a debrief/evaluation of the meeting and brainstorming session to generate ideas for future MASE meetings - also facilitated by Mary McDonald.

Notes from the meeting are attached.
